  Stress for Emphasis:
 

Normally, the last content word in a phrase or sentence is given primary stress. In everyday situations of expression; however, stress patterns change to convey underlying meaning. Stress emphasizes the main points in a message.

In the following sample, a sentence is spoken with normal stress and then with different patterns of stress in order to make clear distinctions in meaning.

Do you think you'll finish tonight? ....... I plan to finish tonight.
