VOCAL & TIMING PATTERNS: Reduced Forms and Rhythm

As well as unstressed syllables, other reductions are made in American English that also influence its rhythm. Reductions, or reduced forms, are words or groups of words that are usually spoken simply and quickly. The vowels are unstressed and consonants are merged or silent.

Reduced forms give flow and rhythm to speech and allow easier expression of complete thoughts. Even the most articulate speakers of Standard-American English use reductions.
