Consonants are classified by their place and manner of production. Some are produced more than one way, because they are influenced by neighboring sounds (the sound t, for example, has five variations for this reason). Some may be produced differently in the beginning of a word than in the middle or the end. Also, some are combined with other consonants in ways unfamiliar to the English learner. Often these combinations occur at the end of words. It is very important to focus on word endings in order to speak English clearly. The proper pronunciation of endings with suffixes, such as –s, -es, or –ed also has an effect on grammar.
